Income tax returns
What is income tax return (ITR) filing?
An income tax return is the yearly statement of your income, deductions and tax paid that you file with the Income Tax Department on the e-filing portal. Filing it on time keeps you compliant, lets you claim back any extra tax that was deducted, and gives you a record of income that banks and visa offices ask for.
Who has to file an ITR for FY 2025-26?
You must file if your total income before deductions is above the basic exemption limit: ₹4 lakh under the new tax regime, or under the old regime ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh if you are 60 to 79, ₹5 lakh if you are 80 or older). You must also file, whatever your income, if for example you have foreign assets or foreign income, deposited ₹1 crore or more in current accounts, spent more than ₹2 lakh on foreign travel, paid more than ₹1 lakh in electricity bills, or had TDS/TCS of ₹25,000 or more (₹50,000 for senior citizens). If you are not sure, ask us and we will check.
What is the last date to file an ITR for FY 2025-26?
For FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) the standard due dates are 31 July 2026 for individuals without business income (ITR-1 and ITR-2), 31 August 2026 for business owners and professionals who do not need a tax audit (ITR-3 and ITR-4), and 31 October 2026 for tax audit cases. If you miss the due date you can still file a belated return until 31 December 2026, with a late fee and interest. The government sometimes extends these dates; our Due dates page shows the current ones.
What documents do I need to file my income tax return?
Most salaried people need their PAN, Aadhaar, Form 16, bank account details and proofs of investments or deductions. If you have other income, also keep your capital gains statements, rent received, interest certificates and home-loan certificate. Business owners also need bank statements and sales and purchase records. The Document checklist page has the full list for each service.
My employer already deducts TDS. Do I still need to file an ITR?
Yes, if your income is above the exemption limit. TDS is only tax collected in advance; the return is where your final tax is worked out. Filing also lets you claim deductions your employer did not count, report other income such as interest or capital gains, and get a refund if too much TDS was deducted.
Can you file my return for me?
Yes, that is what we do. You share your documents, we work out your income and tax under both regimes, check them against your Form 26AS and AIS, file the return and help you e-verify it. You can come to our office or send everything online.
What is the default tax regime, and can I choose the old one?
The new tax regime is the default. It has lower slab rates but allows very few deductions. You can choose the old regime instead when you file, if your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest and so on) make it cheaper. Salaried people can choose every year; people with business income can switch back to the old regime only once. Try our Old vs New regime calculator, and we will confirm the better option before filing.
How do I check my Form 26AS and AIS?
Log in to the income tax e-filing portal with your PAN. Form 26AS shows the TDS and TCS deposited against your PAN, and the Annual Information Statement (AIS) shows wider information such as interest, dividends, share and property transactions. We compare both with your documents before filing, because a mismatch is the most common reason for an income tax notice.
Do you handle capital gains and rental income?
Yes. We report capital gains from shares, mutual funds and property, rental income from house property, and interest and other income, and claim the deductions each one allows, such as the standard deduction on rent and home-loan interest.
How do I e-verify my ITR, and what if I forget?
A return must be verified within 30 days of filing, otherwise it is treated as not filed. The easiest ways are an Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or a pre-validated bank or demat account. We help every client complete this step right after filing.
What happens if I don't file my ITR by the due date?
You can still file a belated return until 31 December, but you pay a late fee of ₹5,000 (₹1,000 if your total income is up to ₹5 lakh), interest on any tax still due, and you cannot carry forward most business or capital losses to future years. Any refund you are owed also comes later.
Can I still file my ITR on paper?
Almost everyone now has to file online on the e-filing portal; paper returns are only allowed for a few very senior citizens. Online filing is faster to process, easier to track, and refunds come quicker.
Refunds, revisions and notices
How do I claim an income tax refund?
There is no separate application: the refund is claimed in your ITR. If the TDS or advance tax you paid is more than your actual tax, the return shows the refund, and once it is e-verified and processed by the department the amount is credited to your pre-validated bank account.
How long does a refund take?
It depends on the Income Tax Department, not on who files the return. Refunds usually come within a few weeks of e-verification once the return is processed. You can track the status on the e-filing portal, and we follow up for our clients if a refund is delayed.
I made a mistake in my ITR. Can I correct it?
Yes. You can file a revised return until 31 December of the assessment year (31 December 2026 for FY 2025-26). After that, an updated return (ITR-U) can be filed within 48 months from the end of the assessment year, but only to add income or reduce a loss, and it comes with additional tax. Tell us early and we will correct it the cheapest way.
I did not file returns for past years. What can I do?
For the latest year you can still file a belated return until 31 December. For older years, the updated return (ITR-U) is usually the only route, with additional tax depending on how late it is. We look at each year and tell you what is possible and what it will cost before we file.
I have received an income tax or GST notice. What should I do?
Don't ignore it, and don't wait until the last day. Common income tax notices include an intimation under section 143(1) (a mismatch in your return), a defective return under section 139(9), and a proposal to adjust a refund against old demand under section 245. Share the notice with us; we will explain what it means, collect the documents needed and prepare your reply before the deadline.
GST
Do I need GST registration for my business?
In Maharashtra, GST registration is generally required once your annual turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services. Some businesses must register whatever their turnover, for example those selling goods to other states. Many businesses also register voluntarily to claim input tax credit or to work with larger clients. Tell us about your business and we will confirm what applies to you.
Do I have to file GST returns if I had no sales?
Yes. Once you are registered, you must file your GST returns even for a month or quarter with no sales. A late fee applies if a nil return is filed late, so we file nil returns for our clients on time.
Business and registrations
Am I eligible for the presumptive taxation scheme?
Small businesses can declare income at a fixed percentage of turnover under section 44AD if turnover is up to ₹2 crore (₹3 crore if cash receipts are no more than 5%). Professionals such as doctors, consultants and freelancers can use section 44ADA if receipts are up to ₹50 lakh (₹75 lakh with the same cash condition). You then file ITR-4 and usually need no detailed books. We check whether it actually saves you tax before choosing it.
Do you help startups and small businesses?
Yes. We register the business (company, Shop Act, Udyam, GST), set up bookkeeping, file GST and income tax returns, and help with TDS and loan documents, so a new business has one team for all its compliance.
How long does Private Limited Company registration take?
It usually takes one to two weeks after we receive complete documents, depending on name approval and processing time at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
